Jack Shephard
Before
the crash...

Worked as a spinal surgeon at the same hospital with his father, Christian,
also a doctor, with whom he has a conflicted relationship.

Met Desmond during a tour-de-stad run.

Successfully operated on a woman, Sarah, whose back was broken in a car
accident and supposedly irreparable.

Married Sarah.
-
Sarah later left him because he worked too much and wasn't there for her.
-
Learned how to play poker in Phuket, Thailand.
- Reported his alcoholic father to the hospital board after a patient died
under
his knife.
- Went to Australia to find his missing father only to discover he'd drank
himself to death.
- Arranged to bring his father's body back with him on the plane from
Australia
for burial.
- Contested the divorce Sarah wanted.
- Obsessed with knowing the name of whom Sarah was seeing.
- Attacked his father at an AA meeting because Jack thought Christian
was the man Sarah was seeing.
- Arrested and bailed out by Sarah.
On the island...
- Became the de facto, though reluctant, leader of the survivors.
- Solved disputes with reason but not afraid to use force if necessary.
- Euthanized the U.S. Marshal.
- Found his father's coffin but not the body.
- Discovered caves which provided shelter and a fresh water supply.
- Trapped by cave-in and rescued by Charlie.
- Tried but failed to save Boone's life.
- Competed with Sawyer for Kate's affection.
- Kissed by Kate and wanted more but became confused when she ran away
from him.
- Did not believe pushing the button in the hatch/Swan station was
important.
- Frustrated with Sawyer hording and controlling the medical supplies;
challenged him to a game of poker and won the supplies back.
- Organized the hunting party to find Michael after he ran off.
- Angered by Mr. Friendly's threats to leave the Others alone and to not
attempt a rescue of Michael or Walt.
- Trekked into the jungle to trade Henry Gale for Michael and Walt but found
Michael unconscious and alone in the jungle.
- Realized Libby could not be saved and gave her a shot to ease her
suffering.
- Secretly planned to turn the tables on Michael when he realized Michael
was
compromised by the Others.
- Captured by the Others.
- Held captive in an underwater part of the Hydra station.
- Held Juliet hostage in an escape attempt but was recaptured.
- Shown a file that contained information about his life and was told Sarah
is
happy in her new relationship.
Kate Austen
Before
the crash...

Killed her real father because he abused her and her mother.

Arrested by U.S. Marshal Edward Mars but escaped his custody when
their car crashed after he swerved to avoid a black horse in the road.

Visited her step-father, Sgt. Sam Austen, whom she thought would
be supportive but who rejected her.

Caused the death of her childhood boyfriend, Tom, while resisting arrest.

Held up a New Mexico bank to recover her most cherished possession,
a metal toy airplane that once belonged to Tom.
- Fugitive from justice for several years.
- Crimes included armed robbery, assault, resisting arrest.
- Extradited to U.S. to stand trial.
On the island...
- Bravely led the first exploration into the jungle.
- Tried to rescue Claire and Charlie when they were kidnapped by
sinister Ethan Rom.
- Recovered from beneath an island waterfall the U.S. Marshal's case
that was full of guns.
- In the case was the toy plane that belonged to her childhood boyfriend,
Tom.
- Delivered Claire's baby in the middle of the jungle.
- Exposed to the group as a fugitive by Sawyer after trying to steal his
place on the raft.
- Initially held prisoner in the hatch/Swan station by Desmond but escaped.
- Nursed Sawyer back to health from his infected gun shot wound.
- Felt she was going insane when she thought she heard her dead father speak
through Sawyer and when she saw the same black horse on the island that
caused the crash of the Marshal's care.
- Secretly followed Jack, Locke & Sawyer searching for Michael; captured by
the Others and only released when Jack agreed to leave the Others alone.
- Used by Sawyer for his alibi during his long con to get control of all the
guns.
- Trekked into the jungle with Claire and Rousseau and finds the seemingly
abandoned Dharma medical station.
- Went with Jack to trade Henry Gale for Michael and Walt; helped bring the
Michael back to the Swan station.
- Convinced by Michael to help him attack the Others and free Walt but was
double-crossed by Michael.
- Captured by the Others.
- Held captive in cages in part of the Hydra station.
- Given a dress by Ben.
