A Recapitulation of the Love Story of LOST
Written Exclusively for J&K.org By Erica

 >> SEASON FIVE

By far the most trying season for Jack and Kate, their divided opinions about returning to the Island is
intensified and advances their physical separation. Jack, intent on returning to the Island, enlists the aid of
a former adversary, who claims that he knows exactly what it will take for Jack to get everyone back to the
Island. Cleaning himself up and dealing with the residual effects of his withdrawal from prescription drugs,
Jack sets out to reunite the group of survivors that were rescued in order to place the plan of returning to the
 island into full effect.

In the mode of a flashback, during one of their first nights on the rescue boat, Jack tells Kate that he needs her
help convincing everyone to lie so they can protect their friends who remain on the Island. Kate agrees to help
him and tells him, as if it is the most obvious fact on the planet, 'I have always been with you'.

In present time, Kate still very intent on never returning the Island, encounters trouble as a secret individual
plans to take legal action to prove that Kate is not Aaron's mother, in an attempt to take the child out of her
custody. Troubled by this development, Kate packs up and takes off with Aaron. Unsure of what to do next,
Kate almost calls Jack, his number on speed-dial, but refrains from doing so. After the attempt to strike a deal
with the lawyer of the undisclosed client goes sour, Kate continues to hide out with Aaron. She spies on the
lawyer in order to reveal the identity of his client.

Jack gets further caught up in reuniting the group and learns that everyone, including Kate, is in serious
danger. He calls her, worried that something may have happened to her. Reluctant to pick up when she sees
that Jack is calling, Kate finally answers it. Jack desperately asks to see her, but Kate refuses, then
eventually gives in and asks to meet, very dismayed about the situation with Aaron and the realization that
she may lose him. Jack meets Kate while she continues to spy on the secret client's lawyer, and she is
amazed, awed by the sight of him, clean-shaven, dressed in a tailored suit, the complete picture of what he's
always been to her brought back to life, the first time she's seen her Jack in a very long time. Recovering from
the looks of adoration and unabashed love, Kate refuses to let on to Jack that something is going on but he
asks her again and again until she tells him that someone is trying to take Aaron away from her. Calming her
down and insuring her that nothing is going to happen to Aaron, Jack offers his help.

Finally spotting the lawyer that she's intent on following, Kate urges Jack to get in the car, and he does. As
they watch the lawyer's every move, his client is finally revealed to be Claire's mother, Carole. Afraid that she
will definitely lose Aaron, Kate breaks down emotionally. So affected by Kate's distress, Jack tells her that he
can fix this situation, that he can make everything okay again. Kate, defenseless against Jack's confidence
and her belief that he is the only one who can make things right again, allows him to do what he says he can
do. During his confrontation with Carole, Jack discovers that she has no idea about Aaron whatsoever.

Later in the day, Jack and Kate meet with the former foe that is certain that he can get the group back to the
Island. Kate discovers that the person that Jack trusts to return them to the Island is the same person that is
trying to take Aaron away from her. Disappointed and angry with Jack for placing his allegiance to this person,
Kate dismisses his attempt to explain, retrieves Aaron and storms off.

After discovering the exact implementation of the plan for returning to the Island, along with all the stipulations
and requirements of the endeavor, Jack places everything in order, to ensure success. Jack is also told that he
should grab everything that he needs, because he will never return to the 'real' world. Connectedly, Jack
returns to his condo and finds a very saddened, tear-stricken Kate in his bed. Worried about her, but not really
surprised that she's there, Jack asks her what happened. Kate tells Jack that she's going back to the Island,
with him. Adamant on keeping the cause for her change of mind a secret, Kate demands that Jack never inquire
about Aaron's whereabouts. After Jack agrees, Kate kisses him passionately, pulling him down to the bed to
make love. (It is revealed in a later episode that Kate gave Aaron away to his grandmother, Carole, before
arriving at Jack's condo. It is also revealed in that same episode that Kate is returning to the Island to reunite
 Claire with Aaron.)

The next morning, Jack and Kate share a quick conversation and separate to meet at the airport for their
designated flight, Ajira Flight 316. When Jack sees Kate at the airport, he smiles and waves. She greets him
blankly and continues on, the expression in her eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses. While on the plane,
Jack and Kate speak of what they're about to embark on, both within their relationship, and on returning back
to the Island after so long. After a heavy stream of turbulence on the flight, Jack awakens on the Island, alone.
Hearing the helpless pleas of someone nearby, he jumps into the water to save him, with Kate lying lifeless
nearby. Jack reaches her and gets her to wake up, grateful that she's okay.

Upon swallowing the realization that they are indeed back on the Island, Jack and Kate run into an old friend
they believed died when they left the Island three years ago. This friend reunites them with their other friends
that were left behind. During this reunion, Jack and Kate learn that the Island is not exactly the same as they
left it, the year is now 1977. In order not to be spotted as outsiders, Jack and Kate are infiltrated into the
Dharma Initiative, as a janitor and mechanic, respectively. They continue to lay low within their new roles until
they learn that one of their own, who returned to the Island with them, has caused an upheaval and has been
imprisoned. In a torrent of circumstantial events, a child, actually the younger version of their future adversary
is shot by their imprisoned friend during his escape.

In need of the expertise and precision of a trained surgeon, Jack is asked to help save the child, his future
nemesis in fact. Jack, with valid reasons of his own, refuses to perform the surgery. Kate, shocked and terribly
confused about this 'new' Jack, completely mystified by his behavior, confronts him about it, stating that she
likes the 'old' him. Jack indicates to Kate that she didn't like the 'old' him either. Kate, upset and hurt by Jack's
words, storms off to help the child as much as she can. She decides to take the child to people that can help
him and does so. The child's father, confused about his disappearance, raises his suspicions of Kate after she
slips during a conversation with him. The father tells Jack that he will report Kate, and to protect her, Jack
intimidates the man, and tells him that Kate is not to be bothered. After informing his friends about Kate's
mistake, while they called her actions foolish, Jack asserts that Kate's heart was in the right place.

The plot for Jack and Kate thickens as another old friend arrives to the Dharma compound, certain that Jack
was lied to about the reasons why he had to return to the Island. Upon hearing this friend's plans to correct the
timeframe on the Island, Jack decides to help him, against the advice of his friends. Kate, unsure about the
plan, is brought around by Jack, who tells her that the only way she's going to find what she's looking for is to
go along with it. Kate agrees to help and they set off. Stopping to get guns, a shootout ensures, but they escape
unscathed. While trekking through the jungle, Kate voices her suspicious opinions of their friend to Jack, who
assures her that he hopes he knows what he's doing.

This friend explains his plan to Jack and Kate, that there is a hydrogen bomb on the Island, and the detonation
of that bomb is the only way to revert time to its proper place. Jack believes that the plan makes sense and he
expresses that he's on board, while Kate further expresses her uncertainty. Upon reaching their destination,
their friend is killed. Jack and Kate attempt to escape, but are captured by the people their friend believes
obtain the location of the hydrogen bomb. In an emotionally charged scene, Jack pleads his case, if they can
revert time, Oceanic Flight 815 never happens; the friends they've lost after the crash will be completely fine
and safe. Kate, fixed on the implications of this plan as it relates to her relationship with Jack, tries her best to
talk him out of it, and is visibly and emotionally distraught at his decision to go along with this mission.

Once they are released and reunited with their friend who escaped imprisonment days before, Jack places his
plan into action and is determined to find the hydrogen bomb. Kate fully voices her disagreement with Jack's
idea and tells him that this is one thing she is not on board for with him and leaves. Jack, with the help from
their former captors, sets off to locate the hydrogen bomb. Once Kate arrives to the Dharma compound, she
discovers that it's being evacuated via the submarine. Placed on the sub in handcuffs, Kate informs her friends
of Jack's plan and persuades them to return to the Island with her to stop him.

After retrieving the core of the hydrogen bomb, Jack, on his way to the site where he plans to detonate the
bomb, is halted to a stop when Kate and friends stand in the way of his path. Irritated, Jack insists that they
move, but a friend urges to speak to him, and Jack reluctantly agrees. After a failed attempt by this friend to
stop him by both persuasion and force, Jack scouts the site, preparing to execute his plan. Kate finds him and
tenderly cares for his wounds. Jack asks her why she demanded that he never inquire about Aaron.
Begrudgingly, Kate tells him that she was so angry with him for making her come back to the Island. She also
tells him that she wants to reunite Aaron with his mother.

Understanding of her feelings, Jack utilizes Kate's reason for coming back to help her understand why she
should be on his side. Jack states that if the crash never happens, Claire and Aaron will always be together,
and that no matter what, the power is in Claire's hands in regards to Aaron. Captivated by the return of the Jack
she knows best, the man who only wants the best for everyone, the man who is taking matters into his own
hands and is poised, determined to see it through, Kate says 'Yes' to Jack's question of 'Are you with me on
 this?'.

Prepared to fulfill his mission, Jack looks Kate in the eyes, steps closer to her, nods silently and storms off,
leaving Kate, perched to state her love for him, silent and solemn, kicking herself for not telling him. Jack finally
reaches the outskirts of the site and is soon caught by the guards at the site. Alone and outnumbered, Jack
shoots his way closer, while Kate and friends arrive as his back-up.

Jack reaches the exact spot of detonation, and positions the hub of the bomb at its opening. Before dropping it,
he searches the sea of near-by faces for Kate, and finds her as she is already staring at him intently, teary-
eyed. As if reading his mind for what he needs, her final approval, Kate nods, closing her eyes as Jack drops the
bomb. Upon discovering that the bomb doesn't detonate, the site intensifies in danger, with everything in its
vicinity being sucked into it. Jack, caught in the crossfire, is banged firmly on the back of the head. Upon
contact, Kate screams his name and, dodging everything in her path to reach him, is successful, finally by his
 side.

Jack and Kate work together to clear the location after losing one of their friends to the compelling strengths of
the site. Positioned next to the secured bomb, their friend strikes its side until it detonates...or does it? The
screen fades to white before we know if Jack's plan worked. Jack and Kate's fate is left undetermined in such an
epic manner, until the next and FINAL season...
