SEASON FOUR
Upon the success of
contacting rescue, Jack and Kate anticipate their arrival and continue to
deal with those who are trying to thwart their mission. As the group splits
into two camps, of those who wish to be rescued and those who do not,
as a result of differing opinions of a conflicting message from one of their
own, who perished in order to ensure that rescue could be contacted, Jack and
Kate stay together, and discover the passengers of the chopper and also
uncover the true purpose of their interest in the Island, and that rescue is
the farthest thing from their minds.
In an attempt to
figure out what is taking place with the other camp, Jack enlists Kate to
lead the mission. Upon arrival to the other camp, Kate, with an ulterior
motive of her own, intends to find out if the passengers of the chopper are
aware of her fugitive status as she wonders if rescue is such a good idea
for her, due to what awaits her if they are rescued. Upon the news that her
fugitive status is known, out of fear and panic, Kate is tempted to remain
on the Island with this camp, tempted to continue to run from her past, but
upon the news that she is not pregnant and self-realizations that she no
longer has to settle for what she truly does not want, Kate returns to Jack
and the camp on the beach in order to work towards rescue.
As Jack and Kate are
tersely reunited, distrust towards their supposed rescuers ensures and
strengthens as communication lines are blurred between the passengers of the
chopper and the inhabitants of the freight, whose intent on the Island is to
retrieve a past foe and to kill everyone in order to preserve a major
cover-up, designed to keep the Island itself a well kept secret. As the
threat of the freight approaches the beach and has since arrived to the
other camp as they learn that is where their target is located, turmoil
ensures, causing the group to split, most of them returning to the beach,
entrusting Jack and Kate with their protection.
Before the groups
reunite, and upon the news that they will not be rescue, Jack falls ill, as
a result of an infected appendix. Extremely worried and scared for Jack's
life, Kate fears losing him as an unorthodox and hazardous surgery is
performed on him, Jack adamant about watching the entire procedure. Kate is
present during the surgery; witness to the painful experience the surgery is
for Jack, not capable of watching him in such pain and allows for him to be
sedated against his requests. The experience of almost losing Jack drives
Kate to further realize for just how much she loves him and how she truly
can not imagine her life without him.
Before Jack is able to
fully heal, a chopper is sighted from the beach, their chances of being
rescued renewed as a phone is dropped in their laps, a tracking device is
activated that will help to track the airliner. With the aid of the phone,
Jack and Kate trek in the direction of the chopper and are abruptly reunited
with some members from the other camp. Bad news ensures when Jack and Kate
learn that one of their own, Claire, went missing and her newborn son,
Aaron, was left behind. Distraught by the news, Jack leaves the infant in
Kate's care and hastily takes off towards the chopper against Kate's
protests. Arriving back to the beach, where most of the group is headed
towards the freight, Kate leaves the baby in their care, and goes after Jack
to help. On her way, she is caught by the menacing antagonists of the
freight.
Jack finally finds the
chopper and is reunited with members from the other camp and discovers more
mysteries about the Island, the intent of those survivors who wish to
explore them, as well as the purposes of the freighters. Barely escaping the
grasps of her captors, Kate happily reunites with Jack and joins him on the
chopper to return to the beach. As the chopper runs out of fuel, their trip
back to the beach is delayed as they land on the freight to refuel. Jack
learns of the dangers that are expected on the freight and the true intent
of the freighters, he then grabs Kate and other group members and escapes
the destruction of the freight as it explodes, some of the group left behind
to their deaths.
On their subsequent
trip to the beach, Jack and Kate discover that the Island has disappeared.
As the freight suffers further malfunction, it crashes into the water. All
of the passengers, which include Jack, Kate, Aaron, and three other
survivors, are safely harbored, out at sea with no land in sight. Upon
rescue from an unforeseen, yet friendly ally, Jack informs everyone that
they must lie about the existence and the occurrences of the Island in order
to protect the friends they have unintentionally left behind.
In a series of
flashforwards, life for Jack and Kate almost immediately after the rescue is
revealed. Part of the Oceanic 6, a name created by the media, Jack and Kate
face the many questions that the public have about their miraculous rescue.
The lie that they create includes portraying infant Aaron as Kate's son.
Jack is finally allowed to lay his father to rest and unexpectedly learns
that Aaron's mother, Claire, is his half-sister from a relationship his
father had with another woman. This causes issues for Jack and Kate, who
were close to something more, but are caught at a crossroads involving
Aaron's true maternity.
Kate is then
prosecuted for her previous crimes. Jack takes the stand during her trial,
as a character witness, and proclaims that Kate was the reason why he and
the others survived, that she saved his life, reiterating the lie they were
forced to tell. Kate doesn't allow Jack to lie for her in a court of law,
asking that he refrain from speaking about the crash and incidents
thereafter. The prosecution asks if Jack loves Kate and he states that he
doesn't, not anymore. Later, as Kate leaves the courthouse parking lot after
accepting a plea bargain that declares that she is not to leave the state of
California, Jack catches up with her, and affirms that he didn't mean what
he said on the stand, about not loving her anymore. Relieved by the news,
Kate offers Jack to follow her to her home, but Jack her offer,
uncomfortable with being around his nephew Aaron and the guilt that it
strengthens inside of him. Disappointed, Kate tells Jack that he is always
welcomed to come by to see them, and then drives away.
Soon after, Jack takes
Kate up on her offer and they begin a serious romantic relationship as they
live happily together and take on the roles of surrogate parents to Aaron.
Completely satisfied with how their life together is working out, their
sexual tension relieved and the passion and eagerness of their coupling
unmistakable, Jack and Kate are transformed into what they always wanted to
be, redemption at their fingertips as they allow themselves to love each
other fully without inhibition.
Paradise is
interrupted when Jack begins to experience signs of paranoia, his
guilt-ridden conscience over what happened on the Island truly beginning to
eat away at him. Amid the craziness that he feels building inside of him
after peculiar encounters with individuals of past and present, who urge him
to return to the Island, he attempts to hold onto everything he loves as he
asks Kate to marry him, which she enthusiastically and excitedly accepts. As
things fall apart further and his resistance to the severity of the lie
begins to crumble, the beginning stages of his breakdown seep through. As he
discovers a secret that Kate has kept from him and has performed behind his
back, Jack's paranoia and issues with trust run rampant, propelling him to
leave the home he's made with the love of his life. Kate is left behind
devastated and heartbroken as she watches him leave, the path to his
self-destruction initiated.
As a continuation of
the airport scene that appeared at the end of season three, occurring three
months after Jack left the home he and Kate made together, Jack tries to
prove to Kate just why he left her and Aaron behind, in an attempt to
protect them. Blinded by angry tears, Kate rebuffs Jack's explanations for
breaking up their happy home, and chastises him for letting himself
self-destruct, the love she feels for him still apparent, but slightly
masked by her irate response to his reasoning. She leaves as irate and
heartbroken as she's ever been before. Jack then visits an old acquaintance
from the Island, who has surprisingly passed away, the death causing more
distress and guilt, and learns that he must return everyone, including his
dead associate, to the Island.
