SEASON ONE
The Pilot episode
introduces the enormity of Jack and Kate's narrative and sets the tone for
all that comes after. We are introduced to a man, a strong, determined,
compassionate, good-natured, courageous man, a doctor who does all that he
can to save whomever he can as he realizes that the plane he boarded from
Australia just hours ago has crashed. Jack. Upon tending to his injuries, we
are introduced to a woman, a guarded, concealed, yet tough, caring,
kind-hearted woman who finds this mystery man to be insane, yet mesmeric as
he asks her to sew his wound with a simple needle and thread, but soon finds
herself saying yes. Kate.
Previous to boarding
Oceanic Flight 815 from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, Jack retrieves the
dead body of his estranged father to return it for proper burial, while Kate
is a fugitive detained by US Marshals and returned to the States after
attempting to escape charges for committing first-degree murder; their life
stories couldn't be any more different. From the moment they met, one can
see that they already have this history and they are connected in some way,
some huge way that could not be dampened by the tragedy that surround them or the differences that lie between them.
Their problems and
issues are laid out on the line within their first scene: Kate's inability
to stay and constant need to run and Jack's need to fix everything that is
wrong and that is in his ability to fix. Yet, amid the subtle revelation of
their personal strife, Jack tells Kate a personal story about fear and the
battle he has overcome it. This story bridges the space that lie between
them at this time. Kate's undivided attention, her avid gaze as he tells the
story is that of pure adoration, amazement and astonishment, and from this
moment on, this man and woman, who met under the strangest, most unique
circumstances, are inextricably bound. This is where it all began.
Additionally in the
Pilot episode, no longer strangers as they introduce themselves by the fire
on the beach where they landed, Jack and Kate set out on a mission in an
attempt to contact anyone who can tell them where they are and come for
them, but they discover more than they bargained for in the mysterious
jungle they are immersed in. From episode to episode, Jack and Kate face
each and every conflict laid before them, together.
Fairly early on, they
clash on issues such as the decision of moving further inland for safety and
hospitable purposes and the implications that these decisions have on their
ever-growing feelings for each other, Jack finding himself in danger making
their intended separation harder to accept, the true nature of Kate's
sketchy past and the issues of trust that Jack deals with due to the evasive
behavior and dishonest temperament that Kate displays in light of the truth,
a truth that she isn't forthcoming with and a truth that Jack finds himself
desperately needing to know, causes problems for them that the situation
they find themselves in is not conducive to resolving.
Once Kate's fugitive
status is revealed, upon admission all her own to Jack, they soon return to
the ripeness of their budding friendship and emergent romance, even as more
delicate secrets and issues of their pasts threaten to set them apart. As
the dangers and mysterious nature of the Island and the clashing of
differing personalities and motives among members of the group begin to cast
a dark cloud over the safety and diplomatic intentions of the collective in
their end goal of rescue, Jack and Kate stand on the front lines as the two
people that the assembly trusts the most with their safety and with leading
them to some aspect of normalcy. Jack, reluctantly caving to the pressures
of the situation and the encouragement of the group, takes on the role of
the leader, after a tragedy forces him to stand up and establish, the best
he can, some type of order and cohesiveness for the group.
Amid the tragedies of
kidnappings, deaths and deceit from within the group, and new discoveries of
the Island, Kate fully supports Jack's role as the leader and stands by his
side through every decision and course of action he makes, officially his
right hand, his second-in-command, his equal partner in every way as she
accepts his request that she have his back through whatever they are about
to embark upon. She is the one he counts on the most and he is the one she
looks to the most, the incredible team they make corresponds with the
unbelievable emotions they already feel for one another.
The Doctor and The
Fugitive. Two different worlds. Two diverse outlooks. Two hearts. Become
one.
