A Recapitulation of the Love Story of LOST
Written Exclusively for J&K.org By Erica

 >> SEASON THREE

Their fates tentative and their lives in the hands of the Others, the strangers who inhabited the Island before
them and the ominous enemy they have battled with thus far, Jack and Kate are separated, bound to their
respective enclosures as the enigmatic group on the other side of the Island intends to get just what they want.
As their separation continues, Jack and Kate grow weary of their parting and wonder about the safety and well
being of the other, their captors unyielding, not allowing them to see each other, positive that the severance of
these two has weakened them, the effects evident in both Jack and Kate's demeanors.

Jack learns why he and his friends have been captured from an unlikely ally, a mysterious female researcher
who has taken a romantic liking to him, when he is told that the leader of the group is in need of his services as
a doctor, to remove a cancerous tumor from his spine. As the life of one of their own is threatened, a man that
Kate has grown to care about deeply, she is forced to make a decision and asks Jack to save him by performing
whatever tasks he has been asked to, in exchange for being released. Jack comes to understand what they are
trying to do, and how Kate is involved in whatever they are trying to accomplish, and rebuffs her requests.
Miscommunication ensures and out of fear, dread, confusion, a misplaced sense of assorted emotions, as well
as a sense of rejection from Jack welling inside of her, Kate sleeps with this other man whom she cares deeply
for. In an attempt to escape, Jack witnesses their coupling and agrees to the surgery in exchange for a ticket
 off the Island.

During the surgery, Jack misleads his captors by placing the patient in grave distress and demands that Kate
is able to escape. Jack and Kate speak to one another via walkie-talkies, in which she pleads with him to tell
her where he is, unwilling to leave without him. He tells her that once she is safe, to contact him and recall the
story that he told her when they met, the story about fear. Kate, with the aid of Jack's mysterious ally, reaches
safe ground and has obtained a way back to their island. She overpoweringly recounts Jack's story, a story that
has taken on so much meaning for them both. Upon her report of the story, Jack instructs Kate to never return
for him and hangs up without a response, a sorrowful goodbye that she never wants to perform and one he so
 desperately needs her to.

After Kate returns safely to the beach, and against the advice of members of the group and without delay, she
starts on her journey to rescue Jack. After a risky and death-defying journey, Kate finally finds Jack, living
happily among their captors in a gated-community, and witnesses the closeness that has progressed between
him and the familiar woman who aided in their enslavement and her escape. Unable to believe her eyes, and
dismayed by what she has seen, Kate finally sneaks onto the compound to confront Jack alone. Bewildered that
she did not respect his wish that she never return, Jack pleads with her to leave, she refuses when his captors
 arrive and detain her.

When they are able to reunite privately, Kate tries her best to persuade Jack to return with her, but he informs
her of the deal he made to return home. Promising to come back for her, Jack departs, leaving a heartbroken
Kate behind. Due to the goals and aims of other parties, Jack’s way off of the Island is terminated. In the midst
of the chaos, Kate and the woman who has grown very close to Jack during their time together, find themselves
in the jungle and having to rely on each other as Kate sets out to find Jack yet again. Kate learns from this
woman that Jack witnessed her indiscretion while she was held captive and that she broke his heart. Destroyed
by the news, Kate finds Jack yet again, expresses her regretful apologies to him, but Jack further reserves
himself as they embark on the trek back to their island, with Jack's new friend returning with them.

As this new romantic interest spends more time with Jack and has earned his trust and admiration, Kate deals
with the consequences of her actions and how she may have lost Jack's affection forever as he continues to
stay at arms length, advancing the remoteness between them. The realization of this as well as further
disinterest from Jack and the pain that it causes propel Kate to continue the halfhearted attachment to this
other man, an association that was initiated when she was held captive. As the possibility of pregnancy further
holds Kate back from her romantic prospects with Jack, they are faced with suspicions of Jack's motives and
intentions from the group, weary of their leader's absence and the deal he made to leave the Island. Dissension
within the group continues as rescue becomes a distant reality as a chopper, along with a freight miles
offshore, is set to approach the Island as well as the Others' conniving plan for another ambush threatens their
 lives.

Jack, with Kate by his side, brings the group back together, and devises a plan to both secure rescue and
defeat the Others. In a quiet, reserved moment during the group trek towards rescue efforts, Jack and Kate
share a tender and significant encounter. Kate's pregnancy standing still undetermined, Jack lays everything
on the line when he tells Kate that he loves her. Shell-shocked and swept off her feet by the declaration, Kate
allows the news to sink in as a promise of the future she and Jack are able to have together.

After a tumultuous battle with those who wish for the group to stay on the Island, Jack and Kate successfully
contact rescue, a goal that they have aimed for from the beginning. On the cusp of rescue, questions are raised
about the true intent of the rescue cavalry that Jack and Kate have contacted and what they propose to
 accomplish upon arrival.

In a flash-forward surprise, it is revealed that both Jack and Kate make it off the Island. It is clear that a
considerable amount of time has passed, about three years, since the rescue and that the rescue was not as
good-intentioned as they thought. Guilt and remorse are illustrated within Jack's temperament and have
caused him to take the path to self-destruction. For what reason this has occurred is yet to be revealed.

In this scene, it is also clear that the dynamic of their relationship has changed as Kate agrees to meet with
Jack in a secret hideaway at the airport, where their feelings for each other remains clear and the longing that
is the result of a long separation very palpable in the moment. It is also revealed that Jack's goal is to return to
the Island and Kate is very reluctant to the idea. In the midst of this news, more questions arise about not only
the nature of their relationship up to this point, and the future of the bond they share, but also the nature of their
 rescue and the consequences thereafter.
